How to Apply

Applicants must apply for a license in the town where the wedding ceremony is to occur (the date and location must be determined before applying for a license).

The marrying couple must personally appear before the Town Clerk before the license is issued.

The name of the Officiant and contact information are required (get info on  Essex Justices of the Peace).

Photo identification with the current address is required. Acceptable forms of identification include a valid driver's license, passport, or state-issued ID card.

The license is valid for 65 days from the date of application.

The fee for the license is $50; if you would like a certified marriage certificate, it will be an additional $20.00 in cash, check, or credit card.

Please fill out the marriage license application below and contact the clerk's office to schedule an appointment. Licenses are issued by appointment only Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., in the Town Clerk's Office. Please call 860-767-4340 x 128 to set up an appointment.

These requirements are the same throughout the State. Refer to CGS §46b-24 to 46b-35.
